What is a DM plant? plant?

A demineralization plant (also called a DM water plant or de-ionization plant) is a water treatment system that removes all dissolved ionic impurities—including calcium, magnesium, sodium, chlorides, sulfates, and silica—from water through a cation-anion ion exchange process.

The output water, called DM waterwater or demineralized water,demineralized water, has near-zero TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and is free from minerals, making it ideal for high-pressure boilers, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and semiconductor industries.

How Does a DM Plant Work?

Our DM Plants operate through a two-stage or mixed-bed ion exchange process:

Stage 1 – Cation Exchange (SAC Resin):
Raw water passes through a Strong Acid Cation (SAC) resin column where positively charged ions (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺) are exchanged with hydrogen ions (H⁺), producing acidic water.

Stage 2 – Anion Exchange (SBA Resin):
The acidic water then passes through a Strong Base Anion (SBA) resin column where negatively charged ions (Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, HCO₃⁻, SiO₂) are exchanged with hydroxyl ions (OH⁻).

Degasser Unit (Optional):
A degasser removes CO₂ gas between cation and anion stages, reducing anion resin load and increasing efficiency.

Mixed-Bed Polisher (Optional):
For ultra-high purity requirements (conductivity < 0.1 µS/cm), a mixed-bedmixed-bed unit containing both cation and anion resins is added as a final polishing stage.

Regeneration:
When resins are exhausted, they are regenerated using HCl (hydrochloric acid) for cation resin and NaOH (caustic soda)caustic soda) for anion resin, restoring full capacity.

Q1. What is the difference between a DM plant and a water softener? water softener?

A water softener removes only hardness-causing ions (Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺) using NaCl regeneration. A DM plant removes ALL dissolved salts and minerals, producing near-zero TDS water. DM Plants are used where very high purity is needed (boilers, pharma), while softeners are used for scale prevention in domestic/industrial heating.
